When do Canadian park pass registrations open? We built a tool to help you find Park Passes, Parking and Shuttles

Open the Canada Pass & Parking Checker before you plan the rest of the day. I built it for the part of park planning that usually sends me through three or four tabs: finding out when a pass opens, whether a date is actually available, and where to finish the booking. It keeps the park rule, release window, current availability signal, and official link together. It does not book for you, but it can save you from building a trip around a pass you cannot get.

The short answer: many BC Parks day-use passes open two days before the visit at 7 a.m. Pacific time. Buntzen Lake parking opens at 7 a.m. the day before. Parks Canada releases the second batch of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shuttle seats at 8 a.m. Mountain time two days before departure. Ontario Parks makes daily vehicle permits available up to five days ahead at participating parks.

How the Canada Pass & Parking Checker works

Search the place first. Try Joffre Lakes, Garibaldi, Golden Ears, Buntzen Lake, Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Algonquin, Sandbanks, or Bruce Peninsula. You can also filter the list by region and access type, including day-use pass, parking, shuttle, camping, lottery, free, or paid.

• Read the card before you click. Each card shows the pass type, cost, booking difficulty, season, booking window, release time, requirements, exemptions, and official booking link.
• Read the date grid. Live cards show Open, Some open, Out, Opens, Not needed, or Check site. That wording tells you whether Canooq found inventory or wants you to confirm on the provider page.
• Use the official link to book. Canooq does not reserve, hold, or purchase passes. The official provider owns the final inventory.

The live checker covers the main BC Parks day-use cards, Buntzen Lake parking, the Lake O'Hara shuttle and random draw, and the Moraine Lake / Lake Louise shuttle. Other listings stay useful because the checker still explains the rule and links to the official source, but those cards are marked informational.

When do BC Parks day-use passes open?

For Joffre Lakes, Garibaldi, and Golden Ears, the booking rhythm is two days before the visit at 7 a.m. PT. That is the moment I would put in my calendar. The pass is free, which makes the timing more important because demand fills the available spaces instead of price sorting the list.

The rule changes by park and facility. Joffre Lakes requires one pass per person, with a maximum of four per transaction. Garibaldi uses vehicle passes at Diamond Head, Rubble Creek, and Cheakamus Lake, with AM and PM windows at Cheakamus. Golden Ears uses vehicle passes for parking areas past the Spirea trailhead and has different rules for the boat launch, regular lots, and late-day arrival.

• Joffre Lakes: Each person needs a pass. Children 12 or younger with a parent or guardian who has a valid pass are exempt. A valid overnight camping reservation also covers the visit.
• Garibaldi: Diamond Head and Rubble Creek require passes Friday through Monday and holidays in the 2026 summer season. Cheakamus requires them daily through September 7, then on the listed busy days through October 12. A vehicle can carry up to 12 people.
• Golden Ears: Passes apply to the listed parking areas on Friday through Monday and holidays from May 15 to September 7, 2026. The boat launch has all-day access. Other lots use AM and PM windows, and no pass is required after 3:30 p.m.

When does Buntzen Lake parking open?

Buntzen Lake releases free parking reservations at 7 a.m. PT for the following day. From May 14 to September 7, 2026, vehicles need a reservation to enter during the reservation period. Pick a morning, afternoon, or full-day pass, then bring the QR code and the vehicle licence plate attached to the reservation.

Buntzen is one of the clearest examples of why I added a “check again” habit to this guide. If the first release sells out, cancellations can return spaces to the system. A bicycle or public transit arrival does not need a vehicle parking reservation.

When do Parks Canada shuttle reservations open?

Moraine Lake Road stays closed to personal vehicles. Parks Canada releases 40% of the 2026 shuttle seats on launch day and the remaining 60% at 8 a.m. MT two days before departure. The regular shuttle reservation includes the return trip to the Lake Louise Park and Ride and the Lake Connector between both lakes. It does not include the Banff National Park entry fee.

The checker helps you see the shuttle release window beside the destination rule. That matters because a Moraine Lake plan needs transportation first. You can then build the rest of the day around the seat you actually secured.

When do Ontario Parks permits open?

Ontario Parks offers daily vehicle permits for one day, one vehicle, and its occupants. Participating parks can release permits up to five days before the visit through the online reservation service. Canooq tracks 7 a.m. ET as the release time for the Ontario permits in the checker, then links you to the official reservation service.

The checker includes Algonquin, Sandbanks, Bon Echo, Pinery, Forks of the Credit, Presqu'ile, and Wasaga Beach. Summer beaches and popular weekends can fill quickly. Pick your park, confirm its operating dates, and book the vehicle permit before planning the rest of the day around it.

How do I find out when sold-out park passes become available?

Start with the release time, then check again after cancellations. BC Parks says cancelled passes can become available again. BC Hydro uses dynamic pass management at Buntzen Lake, so a cancelled reservation can return to the list. Parks Canada also encourages visitors to cancel plans they cannot use, which gives other visitors a chance to book.

• Watch the checker close to the release window. Use the date cells and the last-checked time to see whether the tool has a current signal.
• Search again after a cancellation. A sold-out card can change when someone releases a pass, especially for a free vehicle or parking reservation.
• Open the official page when a spot appears. Canooq can point you to a live or recent signal, but the official provider completes the transaction.
• Keep the rule beside the availability. A newly opened slot still has to match the right vehicle, person, facility, date, time window, or exemption.

What should I do before registration opens?

I treat the release time as the start of the booking task, not the moment to begin researching. Before the window opens, I choose the exact park, trailhead, parking lot, facility, and visit date. I read the requirements so I know whether I need one pass per person, one pass per vehicle, an AM or PM slot, a licence plate, a shuttle departure, or a separate park entry fee.

• Create the provider account first. Many reservation systems ask you to sign in before you can finish a booking. A saved account removes one step from the release rush.
• Put the release time in your calendar. Use the provider's local time zone. BC Parks and Buntzen Lake use Pacific time. Parks Canada uses Mountain time for the shuttle release. Ontario Parks uses Eastern time in the tracked listings.
• Keep a second date ready. If the first date fills, a nearby weekday or a different facility can save the trip without changing the whole plan.
• Check the park page before leaving. Weather, closures, operating dates, and facility rules can change after you book.

What do the availability labels mean?

The park rules still matter after the status turns green

A live “Open” signal answers one question: the monitored provider response showed an open option. It does not replace the park's entry rules. Joffre Lakes counts passes per person. Garibaldi and Golden Ears use vehicle limits and facility windows. Buntzen attaches the reservation to a licence plate. Moraine Lake requires a shuttle plan because the road stays closed to personal vehicles.
