Four kinds of value, one honest total
A headline such as $2,300 or $2,500 can be accurate under the provider's assumptions without being a cheque for that amount. Classify every component before comparing.
| Value type | What it is | When to count it | What can reduce it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash bonus | Money deposited after qualifying actions | Count the stated amount when you can complete every action without extra cost | Payout can take weeks or months and the account may need to stay open |
| Fee savings | Monthly account fee waived for a defined period | Count regular fee multiplied by months you would otherwise keep that account | It is not cash and has no value if you would choose a permanent $0 account |
| Estimated value | Interest, points, trades, transfers, services, or product use converted to dollars | Count only the benefit and quantity you expect to use | Provider assumptions can be much higher than your personal value |
| Referral reward | A reward for joining through a tracked link or code | Confirm the code, funding, purchase, hold, and new-client rule | Sponsored link; the provider controls approval and payout |

| CIBC says the $500 may arrive within seven months after the opening month; the separate $100 card reward may take nine months. | Current offer; CIBC may change or end it | Official offer |

Claim a welcome offer from opening to payout
Turn a promotional page into a short operations checklist. That is the easiest way to earn the offer without missing a posting rule.
- 01
Step 1
Capture the exact offer before applying
Save the landing page and full terms with the date, eligible account, opening window, newcomer or new-client definition, excluded prior relationships, required email or promo code, and payout rule. A search-result headline is not enough. Use the provider page that contains the legal conditions, then keep the confirmation email and application number with the saved terms.
- 02
Step 2
Build a deadline sheet
Write one row for account opening, first deposit, direct deposit, recurring debit, bill payment, debit purchase, minimum balance, linked product, account-good-standing period, expected payout, and first regular monthly fee. Translate “within 60 days” into a calendar date from the actual opening date. Give payroll and bill changes enough lead time to post before the final day.
- 03
Step 3
Complete the smallest valid set of actions
Use real payroll, rent, utilities, phone, insurance, or other expenses you already have. Do not buy unnecessary products to reach a bonus. Confirm transaction amount minimums and posting codes because a transfer between your own accounts, a credit-card payment, a refunded debit purchase, or a one-time payment can be excluded even when it looks similar in the app.
- 04
Step 4
Keep proof until payout
Download statements that show each action and retain the direct-deposit setup record. If a reward is late, contact the provider with opening date, offer name, qualifying dates, and transaction references. Ask for a case number. Keep the account open and in good standing while the terms require it, and avoid switching account type before the reward is deposited.
- 05
Step 5
Review before the regular price begins
A strong first-year offer can become an ordinary expensive account. Compare the monthly fee, balance waiver, branch access, ongoing benefits, and cost of switching one month before the waiver ends. Move recurring transactions methodically if another account wins. Follow any reward hold period before withdrawing or closing.
What the big bank headlines really contain
BMO
Up to $900 cash is the useful headline
BMO's larger newcomer package calculation also includes two years of Performance Plan fee savings, a savings rate assumption, safety-deposit and cheque benefits, a credit-card welcome rate, GIC interest, a family-account saving, and Walmart+ value. The chequing and savings cash components require their own funding, deposit, payment, purchase, goal, or linked-household actions. Read each amount as a separate mini-offer.
Scotiabank
$700 chequing cash sits inside a larger package
The current StartRight calculation adds the $700 chequing offer, potential savings and card bundle cash, one year of account-fee savings, international-transfer fee assumptions, iTRADE trades, and possible Passport Visa Infinite+ value. Choose the chequing account on its cash, required activity, branch access, and $16.95 regular monthly fee. Evaluate any savings, card, or investing product separately.
TD
$500 cash plus one year of fee savings
TD's broader newcomer package adds estimated bonus interest, a credit-card offer, international transfer fees, investing trades and maintenance rebates, and a bundle payment. The chequing decision is simpler: open the eligible Unlimited account by October 1, complete two qualifying activities by the published deadline, keep the account eligible, and compare the post-year-one monthly fee.
CIBC
$500 cash with a long fulfillment window
CIBC requires a recurring direct deposit of at least $500 and one additional activity route for the main reward. The bank says that cash can arrive within seven months after the opening month. A separate $100 reward requires an eligible credit-card approval and can take longer. The newcomer monthly-fee waiver and cash-reward eligibility are related but not identical, so verify both sets of conditions.
Referral offers: smaller payout, simpler account
A referral reward can be worthwhile when the underlying account already wins. Tangerine's current Canooq inventory states a $50 reward after a $250 deposit is made and held for the required period. Wealthsimple's inventory states $25 after $100 in qualifying net deposits, with a reward hold rule. KOHO's inventory provides three free Everything months after the qualifying card purchase, then the paid plan renews unless it is changed or cancelled.
Referral links on this page are Sponsored link placements. Canooq may receive compensation. That does not turn the payout into cash when the provider gives a plan trial, and it does not turn a fintech account into a bank. Confirm the final landing page, attached code, reward amount, qualifying action, monthly price, renewal date, cancellation route, legal institution, and deposit-protection disclosure before funding.
Referral proof to keep
- Landing page showing the attached code
- Signup confirmation and legal name
- Opening and qualifying-funding dates
- Purchase amount and posting date
- Balance-hold or reward-hold end date
- Expected payout destination
- Paid-plan renewal and cancellation date
- Support case number if the reward is missing
Avoid four expensive bonus mistakes
Do not manufacture activity
Moving the same money repeatedly, returning purchases, or creating artificial deposits can fail the terms. Use legitimate payroll, bills, purchases, and savings that fit your normal setup.
Do not borrow for a deposit bonus
A cash bonus cannot justify credit-card interest, overdraft, payday borrowing, or a loan. Use settlement funds you already have and preserve the emergency reserve.
Do not ignore payout lag
Budget as though the reward does not exist until it lands. CIBC can take months, and other providers publish their own fulfillment windows after every activity is verified.
Do not forget the regular account
A $500 reward can disappear over a few years of fees. Review the ongoing account, balance waiver, branch value, and switching plan before the promotional period ends.
Frequently asked questions
What is the largest newcomer bank offer in Canada right now?
BMO currently advertises up to $900 in cash through multiple components, while Scotiabank advertises $700 chequing cash and TD and CIBC each offer a $500 primary chequing reward. The work, eligibility, payout, and monthly fee differ, so the largest usable offer depends on the actions you can complete.
Does an advertised package value arrive as cash?
No. Package value can combine cash, fee rebates, interest, points, credit-card rewards, investment trades, transfer-fee savings, memberships, and other estimated benefits. Count the chequing cash separately.
Can I receive more than one bank bonus?
Potentially, when every institution's new-client and prior-account rules are met. Opening several accounts creates more deadlines and can add monthly fees. Start with the best primary account and claim additional offers only when the products remain useful.
Why has my bank bonus not arrived?
Check whether the transaction posted by the deadline, matched the required type and amount, remained recurring where required, and whether the account stayed eligible. Then contact the provider with the saved terms and statement evidence. Many published payout windows extend several months.
Does using a sponsored Canooq link change the offer?
The provider sets eligibility, price, approval, and payout. Canooq may receive compensation when a labelled sponsored link is used. Compare the sponsored result against the provider's current public offer before applying.
