A Toronto Layover: What You Can Actually Do Between Flights at Pearson

Toronto Pearson is a connecting hub, which means a lot of people pass through it with a gap in the middle of their day and no idea whether leaving is realistic. It usually is, and the deciding factor is not distance. Downtown is 25 minutes away by train.

The deciding factors are whether you are allowed to enter Canada, what your luggage is doing, and how much of your layover is actually free once you subtract the airport process at both ends.

First: can you legally leave the airport?

This is the part people get wrong, and it is the one with real consequences. Leaving the airport means formally entering Canada, which is a different thing from transiting through it.

• Visa-exempt travellers. Most need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to fly to or through Canada, and holding one generally allows entry for a short visit.
• Visa-required travellers. You need a visitor visa to enter. Some nationalities can transit without one under specific programs, but those permit transit only, not leaving the terminal.
• US-bound passengers. If your connection is preclearance for the United States, budget extra time and be careful about leaving and returning.

Check your own situation on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada site before planning anything. Guessing here can mean missing a flight or worse.

Second: how much time do you actually have?

Subtract from the gap between flights: the time to clear customs on arrival, the trip downtown and back, and the time you need to be back at the terminal for your onward flight, which for an international departure means at least two hours.

Overnight layovers change the calculation entirely. Airport hotels connect directly to the terminals, and a downtown hotel is only worth it if you have a full evening and morning.

Third: what to do with your bags

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you are free. If you have to collect and recheck them, which is common on separate tickets, you either carry them around the city or use a baggage storage service.

Pearson has luggage storage options in the terminals, and there are downtown storage services near Union Station. Check what is currently operating before you rely on it, since these services change.

Getting downtown

The UP Express runs between Pearson Terminal 1 and Union Station in roughly 25 minutes, with departures every 15 minutes for most of the day and a stop at Bloor and Weston. It is the fastest and simplest option, it takes contactless payment and PRESTO, and it is the only method worth considering on a tight layover.

The TTC bus and subway combination is cheaper and much slower. A taxi or rideshare costs several times more and, at rush hour, takes longer than the train. From Terminal 3, take the free terminal link train to Terminal 1 first.

What is worth doing with the hours

Within 10 minutes of Union Station

The CN Tower and Ripley's Aquarium are both a short walk and both take about an hour if you have pre-booked. St. Lawrence Market is 10 minutes east and is the better use of the time if you want to eat rather than queue. The waterfront path starts at the foot of the station.

Within 25 minutes

The Distillery District is a pedestrian block of Victorian industrial buildings, cafes and galleries, and it is the most self-contained thing to do in a couple of hours. Kensington Market and Chinatown are a streetcar ride west and give you the most food per dollar in the city.

In summer only

The Toronto Islands ferry takes 15 minutes from the foot of Bay Street and delivers the skyline view that every photograph of the city uses. Allow at least three hours for the round trip including the ferry queue, which can be long on a hot weekend.

If you decide to stay in the terminal

Sometimes the maths says no, and that is not a wasted afternoon. Pearson Terminal 1 has a reasonable spread of restaurants past security, quiet corners at the ends of the piers where nobody sits, and showers in the pay lounges, which is the single best purchase on a long connection between two overnight flights.

Lounge access can be bought on the day at several locations without a premium ticket or a status card, and a day pass usually costs less than a downtown lunch plus two train fares. On a five hour gap after a red-eye, that is the better trade.

Practical rules

• Set an alarm for your return, not a rough intention. Union to Terminal 1 plus security is a firm 90 minutes.
• Check your departure terminal before leaving. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are connected but not adjacent.
• Keep your boarding pass and passport on you, not in a stored bag.
• Winter weather delays trains and roads. In January, keep the plan close to Union Station.
