What's on this page

Canoo is completely free for eligible newcomers and offers museum, park, festival, event and brand perks through one app.

Canada can feel expensive before you have finished setting up a bank account, phone plan and permanent home. Canoo gives eligible newcomers a useful break: free or discounted admission to more than 2,000 museums, parks, science centres, festivals, concerts and other experiences across the country.

The app costs nothing for eligible members. You download Canoo, verify your status, activate the membership and browse the offers near you. Some visits are free, while other listings provide a discount, limited ticket or member-only perk.

What is Canoo?

Canoo is a free newcomer app created by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. The institute is an independent Canadian charity, not a government department. It works with cultural organizations, parks, event producers and companies that want to welcome people who are building a permanent life in Canada.

Canoo reports more than one million members, over 400 partners and more than 2,000 available experiences. The list changes as venues and events join, leave or release limited offers. Open the app when planning a weekend instead of relying on an old list from a blog or social post.

Canoo can make the fun part of settling in cheaper, while Canooq's Ultimate Newcomer Guide to Canada covers documents, banking, housing, taxes and the administrative work around your move.

Who can join Canoo?

Canoo currently accepts two newcomer groups:

  • Permanent residents who landed in Canada within the past five years.
  • New Canadian citizens who are within one year of their citizenship ceremony.

Canoo asks you to verify this status inside the app. Permanent residents scan an eligible PR card dated within the five-year window. New citizens use a citizenship certificate dated within the previous year.

International students, temporary foreign workers and visitors do not qualify under Canoo's published eligibility categories unless they also hold one of the eligible statuses above. A person who became a permanent resident after studying or working in Canada can use the permanent-resident landing date to check the five-year window.

How to set up Canoo

  1. Download Canoo from Apple's App Store or the Google Play Store.
  2. Create an account with a valid email address and open Canoo's confirmation email.
  3. Scan your eligible PR card or citizenship certificate in the app.
  4. Activate the membership during your eligibility window.

Activation starts your first membership year, so review Canoo's current instructions before choosing the date. Canoo's official setup material says members can activate at any point during the eligibility window. Avoid uploading your identity document anywhere except Canoo's official app.

How you find and use Canoo perks

Open Canoo and browse the Places, Events and Deals areas. Listings can include museums, national parks, science centres, festivals, concerts, sports tickets, attractions and time-limited offers from Canadian brands. Filters and location information help you find options near home or during a trip.

Most partner venues accept Canoo members without an advance reservation. Open the venue listing before leaving home and read the admission instructions, operating hours and limits. Ticketed events can have a fixed inventory and may require advance booking. The app tells you when a reservation or separate ticket step applies.

At a standard participating venue, open that venue's page in Canoo and show it to staff when you arrive. Follow the check-in instructions on the screen. Do not assume a screenshot saved days earlier will work, since staff may need to see the live listing or check-in status.

How much can Canoo save?

Canoo charges eligible members no membership fee. The value depends on where you live, which offers you use and whether the app covers the full admission price or part of it.

  • First membership year: 100% off eligible venue visits.
  • Second membership year: 50% off eligible venue visits.
  • Third membership year: 25% off eligible venue visits.
  • Fourth membership year: 15% off eligible venue visits.

Members can remain in Canoo after the fourth year and continue to see selected free or discounted event tickets and exclusive brand offers. Canoo describes the percentage schedule for venue visits. It does not mean every product, event or partner offer follows the same percentage.

A household can save a meaningful amount with two or three museum or attraction visits during the first year. Check every listing for guest rules before bringing a partner, child or friend. Your membership may cover the Canoo member while a guest needs a regular ticket, or the venue may publish a different family rule.

The perks go beyond museums

Canoo started with a strong cultural-access focus, and museums remain a major reason to join. The app now reaches recreation, festivals, concerts, sports and commercial offers. Canoo's homepage highlights national parks, science centres, festivals and museums, along with free or discounted event tickets and gifts or deals from participating brands.

Availability varies by city and season. A large urban centre may show several attractions close together, while members in a smaller community may use Canoo most during trips or for occasional ticket releases. New places and limited offers appear over time, so checking the app once at signup will miss later additions.

Three practical ways to get value from Canoo

Start close to home. Search the app for one museum, science centre, park or attraction that fits a normal weekend. A nearby visit helps you learn the check-in process without adding hotel costs or a complicated trip. Save a second option in case the first venue has limited hours, a special-event closure or instructions that do not fit your group.

Use Canoo when friends or relatives visit. A member benefit can lower your part of an outing even when guests need regular tickets. Compare the Canoo listing with the venue's family passes, free days and timed-entry rules before choosing. One member ticket plus paid guest tickets may still cost less than a different attraction with no Canoo offer.

Check Canoo before travelling within Canada. A city break often includes one major museum, gallery, park or cultural attraction, and the app may cover or discount something already on your list. Search before booking the itinerary, then check again near departure because events and partner offers can appear for a limited time.

Keep a small list of saved places instead of trying to use every perk. Free admission can tempt you to overbook a weekend. One good visit leaves room for transit, meals and the neighbourhood around the attraction, which often helps a new city feel more familiar.

Using Canoo safely

Canoo needs identity information to confirm that you fall within its newcomer eligibility window. Download the app through the official Apple or Google store listing reached from Canoo.ca, use a private connection when scanning documents and protect the email account tied to your membership. Do not send a PR card or citizenship certificate to someone who contacts you through social media.

The app may direct you to a partner or ticketing page for a limited event. Read the destination address before entering information and confirm whether the ticket has a price, service fee or cancellation rule. Canoo membership itself remains free, but a separate partner transaction can have its own terms.

Limits to check before you go

  • Read the live venue page for booking, check-in and identification instructions.
  • Confirm whether the offer covers the member only or includes guests and children.
  • Check the date, ticket inventory and cancellation terms for limited events.
  • Review parking, transportation and normal operating hours on the venue's official website.
  • Keep your account and verification documents private. Use Canoo's official app for identity checks.

Free admission does not remove the rest of the trip cost. Transit, parking, food, special exhibitions and add-on activities may still cost money. A good Canoo outing starts with the app offer and ends with a quick check of the venue's own visitor page.

Is Canoo worth downloading?

Eligible newcomers should check Canoo. The membership has no fee, the setup takes place in one app and one free visit can justify the time spent registering. It also gives you a practical list of places to explore when you are learning a new city or planning your first trips around Canada.

Canoo works best when you activate within the eligibility window, read each listing and use the app during the first membership year. That first year carries the strongest venue benefit. Later discounts and member offers can keep the app useful after free venue admission ends.

Pair the app with Canooq's guides to newcomer bank accounts and building Canadian credit so free outings stay separate from the financial setup that supports your life here.
