Best way to send money to India from Canada

The strongest Canada-to-India quote is usually the one that credits the most rupees to the correct Indian account after all displayed costs. Begin with the live CAD-to-INR bank-deposit comparison, then confirm whether the provider needs an account number and IFSC or offers a supported UPI-linked payout. Account type matters when the recipient is an NRI receiving into NRE or NRO banking.

How Canooq calculates the winner

The winner is the fresh estimate with the highest bank-deposit amount after the displayed fee and exchange-rate markup. It is not a judgment about speed or the best provider for every person.

These are bank-funded, bank-deposit estimates. Public prices may include introductory offers. Card funding, cash pickup, mobile-wallet delivery and the final signed-in quote can differ.

Wise owns the comparison source and does not include every provider. Read the Wise comparison methodology.

IFSC first: how the rupees reach an Indian account

Most remittance services collect CAD in Canada, convert it to INR and pay through an Indian banking partner. The recipient’s account number and IFSC identify the destination account and branch. IMPS and UPI support round-the-clock domestic movement, while NEFT also operates continuously in batches; the provider decides which payout rail sits behind the delivery promise.

A UPI ID is convenient, but do not assume every Canadian remittance can be addressed to one. If the quote asks for conventional bank details, use the account number and IFSC shown in the recipient’s banking app or official statement. Never derive an IFSC from memory after a branch merger or account move.

  • Use bank deposit for rent, family support and routine bills when the recipient has a stable account.
  • Use a provider’s supported UPI flow for speed only after the app validates the recipient name.
  • Keep the purpose code or reason truthful; providers may ask for it before releasing INR.

NRE and NRO accounts change the receiving decision

An NRE account is designed for eligible foreign earnings remitted to India and is maintained in rupees; an NRO account is used for income and transactions connected with India. The recipient should tell you which account to credit and confirm it can receive the proposed remittance. The sender should not guess based on the account holder’s citizenship or location.

For family maintenance, ordinary recipient bank deposit is usually simpler than a SWIFT transfer. For property, investment, education or business payments, ask the institution or a qualified adviser for the required account, purpose and documents before choosing the cheapest consumer quote.

Festivals, reviews and larger transfers

India’s domestic instant rails can be available 24/7, but the cross-border leg still depends on Canadian funding, provider checks and payout-partner operations. Bank holidays and major festival periods can slow manual reviews even when the final domestic credit is electronic.

Larger transfers can trigger questions about the sender, recipient, relationship, source of funds and intended use. Prepare a bank statement or sale, salary, inheritance or loan document before a time-sensitive payment. A first low-value transfer also confirms the account name and IFSC before more money follows.

Questions about sending money to India

Can I send money from Canada directly to a UPI ID?

Some international providers support UPI-linked delivery, while others require an Indian bank account number and IFSC. Choose UPI only when it appears in the provider’s route and the recipient name is validated in the quote.

What is the IFSC code used for?

The IFSC identifies the Indian bank branch used for electronic payment routing. Obtain it from the recipient’s bank app, statement or official bank source and pair it with the exact account number.

Should I send to an NRE or NRO account?

Ask the account holder and their bank. NRE and NRO accounts serve different sources and uses of money, and the correct choice depends on the recipient’s status and the reason for the transfer.

Does UPI make the whole international transfer instant?

No. UPI can make the Indian payout fast, but CAD collection, currency conversion, verification and the provider’s cross-border process happen before that domestic step.
