Career & Work
Weak recommendation letters all read the same way: warm adjectives, no evidence. This template forces the parts that actually persuade a hiring manager or admissions reader — how the recommender knows the candidate, how long, two specific things the candidate did, how they compare to others the recommender has supervised, and an unambiguous statement of support. Use it for jobs, graduate programs, scholarships, volunteer roles, or professional references.
Fill in the fields and the preview updates as you type.
Use this for employment, school, volunteer, scholarship, or professional references where the reader needs evidence, not adjectives.
This template is a writing aid. The recommender should only include accurate information they are comfortable endorsing and signing.
A recommendation letter with two concrete examples, a comparison, and a measured caveat.

Subject: Letter of recommendation for Fatima Al-Zahrani
To whom it may concern,
I am pleased to recommend Fatima Al-Zahrani. I know them as her direct manager.
I have worked with or known Fatima Al-Zahrani for two years and four months.
Fatima Al-Zahrani consistently demonstrates unusual persistence with messy data and a habit of explaining findings in plain language. One example that stands out is she rebuilt our patient wait-time reporting after discovering the previous model double-counted transfers. The corrected figures changed how three clinics scheduled staff and cut average wait times by 18 minutes.
A second example: when a vendor missed a data delivery two days before a board presentation, she reconstructed the month from source exports overnight and flagged exactly which figures were estimates rather than quietly filling gaps.
To put that in context: among the top three of roughly twenty analysts I have supervised in fifteen years.
She is still building confidence presenting to executives, and she knows it — she asked for and completed a presentation skills course last year.
Based on my experience with Fatima Al-Zahrani, I believe they would be a strong candidate for a senior analyst or analytics lead role.

Specifics the reader could verify. A named project, a number, a decision that changed because of the candidate. Generic praise reads as a favour rather than an assessment, and experienced readers discount it.
One measured, non-disqualifying limitation makes the whole letter more credible, especially for academic and senior roles. Frame it as something the candidate is actively addressing, and never raise anything protected under human rights law.
It is common, and it is fine as long as the recommender edits it, changes the wording to their own voice, and only signs claims they can defend on a phone call.
One page. Two full examples plus a comparison line is enough. Longer letters usually mean padding, and readers skim to the closing sentence anyway.
Yes. A letter with no way to verify it is treated as decoration. Include an email and a direct phone line, and tell the recommender to expect a call.
