What to do with it

  1. One receipt per paymentIssue one per payment, numbered in sequence, and keep your own copy. A tenant is generally entitled to a receipt on request.
  2. They matter at tax timeWhere the province has a rent-based tax credit, the tenant will need the year’s receipts (or in Quebec, the RL-31) at tax time. The note under the province card says which.

What this template is for

Use this to issue or request a rent receipt with the details a tax authority will look for: full address, exact period covered, amount, payment method, and who received it.

Rent-based credits have their own residency, income, and eligibility rules. A receipt supports a claim; it does not establish eligibility. Confirm the current rules with the CRA or Revenu Quebec.

How to use it

  1. Select the province so the correct tax credit note appears on the receipt.
  2. Enter the rental address, the exact rent period, and the amount received.
  3. Have the landlord or agent sign it. An unsigned receipt is weak evidence.
  4. Keep one receipt per payment period. A single year-end summary is easier to challenge.

Common questions

Do I send rent receipts to the CRA with my tax return?

No. In Ontario you report the rent you paid on the ON-BEN application filed with your return. You keep the receipts. The CRA can ask for them afterward, and that request is the reason to have them.

Can my landlord refuse to give me a receipt?

In several provinces a landlord must provide a rent receipt on request, free of charge, including after the tenancy has ended. Ontario requires it. Ask in writing and keep the request if you are refused.

What if I paid by e-Transfer and never got a receipt?

Bank records showing the amount, date, and recipient are useful but incomplete, because they do not show the rental address or the period covered. Ask the landlord for receipts covering the year; if they refuse, keep the written request alongside the bank records.

How does this work in Quebec?

Quebec runs on the RL-31 slip, which landlords must issue by the end of February for each leased dwelling. The housing component of the solidarity tax credit is claimed from the RL-31, with rent receipts as backup rather than the primary document.

One receipt per month or one for the year?

Per payment. A single year-end letter saying 'paid $22,200 in rent' is easy to question. Twelve dated receipts each naming the period are much harder to dispute.
