Newcomers from Nigeria

Best credit cards for newcomers from Nigeria

Reviewed August 17, 2026 by Thomas Tremblay

Nigerian households arriving in Canada usually need three things from a card: approval without a Canadian file, a low cost on naira-billed purchases, and a route home that does not depend on Air Canada, which does not fly to Lagos.

The picks below cover all three, using the verified figures from the Canooq comparison table.

The picks

1. Best first card

CIBC · Visa

CIBC Aventura Visa Gold

First year free, a strong Aventura welcome offer, lounge passes, and a NEXUS credit. CIBC's newcomer stream approves without Canadian credit history, and the lounge passes are genuinely useful on long connections through Frankfurt or Istanbul.

Watch out: Aventura points hold their value through the CIBC Rewards Centre. Merchandise redemptions cut that roughly in half.

Annual fee
$139
Welcome bonus
15,000 - 60,000 pts
Minimum spend
$3,000
First-year value
$760

2. Best for no-FX and groceries

Scotia · Amex

Scotia Amex Gold Scene+

No foreign transaction fee removes the 2.5 percent surcharge on naira-billed purchases, and 5x Scene+ on groceries and dining covers the largest household category.

Watch out: Amex acceptance at African and Caribbean grocers in Canada is thin. Carry a Visa alongside it.

Annual fee
$120
Welcome bonus
25,000 - 45,000 pts
Minimum spend
$2,000 - $7,500
First-year value
$330

3. Best for flights home

TD · Visa

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite

Aeroplan books Lufthansa, Turkish, and Ethiopian to Lagos and Abuja, and the free first checked bag is worth real money on a route where luggage matters.

Watch out: Partner awards to West Africa carry carrier surcharges on some routings. Compare the cash-plus-points total before booking.

Annual fee
$139
Welcome bonus
10,000 - 40,000 pts
Minimum spend
$3,000
First-year value
$375

4. Best no-fee starter

Simplii · Visa

Simplii Financial Cash Back Visa

No annual fee and no income floor, so it clears when premium applications do not. Useful as the card that builds the file in months one to six.

Watch out: Modest earn rates. Move your main spending to a category card once your file supports it.

Annual fee
$0
Welcome bonus
Up to 20% cashback (up to $100) in the first 3 months
Minimum spend
None
First-year value
$100

Getting approved with no Canadian credit history

Canadian lenders score you on a file that starts empty the day you land. That is a timing problem, not a credit problem, and every large bank runs a program built around it.

Apply through the newcomer program by name rather than the general application form. The general form runs a standard credit decision and will decline a thin file that the newcomer stream would have approved.

  • Scotiabank StartRight, RBC Newcomer Advantage, CIBC Welcome to Canada, TD New to Canada, and BMO NewStart all issue unsecured cards to people with no Canadian credit file.
  • Bring your permanent resident card or work permit, passport, SIN, and proof of a Canadian address. Some branches also accept a credit report from your home country to support a higher limit.
  • Your first limit is usually $1,000 to $5,000. It grows on request after six to twelve months of on-time payments.
  • A secured card, where you post a deposit equal to the limit, is the fallback if a newcomer program turns you down. It reports to the bureaus the same way.

Naira-billed purchases carry the same 2.5 percent

Foreign transaction fees of 2.5 percent apply on almost every Canadian card. On a household that spends $6,000 a year in Nigerian currency, that is $150 that a no-FX card keeps.

The surcharge sits on top of an exchange rate that already moves sharply. A no-FX card removes the part you control and leaves only the rate itself.

Getting to Lagos on points

Air Canada does not fly to Nigeria, so an Aeroplan award runs on Star Alliance partners: Lufthansa through Frankfurt, Turkish through Istanbul, and Ethiopian through Addis Ababa.

Two things to check before you book. Partner surcharges vary a lot by carrier on this routing, and a long connection is normal, which is where the lounge passes on the CIBC Aventura Gold earn their keep.

Sending money home

Keep remittances off the credit card. Providers usually treat a card-funded transfer as a cash advance, which adds a fee and starts interest immediately.

Naira rate margins vary widely between providers and move quickly, so quote the same Canadian amount at two providers on the day you send and compare the naira delivered.

The habits that build your score fastest

Payment history and utilization drive most of a Canadian credit score. Pay the statement balance in full every month, and keep the balance you carry at statement time under about 30 percent of your limit.

One card used well beats three cards used carelessly. Add a second card once the first has six months of clean history, not before.

  • Set the full-balance autopay the day the card arrives. A single missed payment costs more than a welcome bonus is worth.
  • Do not close your first card once you upgrade. Length of history counts, and the oldest account anchors it.
  • Check your report free at Equifax and TransUnion. Errors on newcomer files are common because names get transliterated inconsistently.

Questions, answered

Which Canadian credit card is best for Nigerian newcomers?

A first-year-free card with a reachable bonus, paired with a no foreign transaction fee card for naira-billed purchases. The CIBC Aventura Visa Gold and Scotiabank Gold Amex cover both jobs and accept newcomer applications.

Can I fly to Lagos using Aeroplan points?

Air Canada does not serve Lagos, but Aeroplan books Star Alliance partners including Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines, which connect Canada to Lagos and Abuja through Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Addis Ababa.

What is the cheapest way to send money to Nigeria from Canada?

Send from a chequing account through a provider that quotes the naira amount received. Rate margins on this corridor vary widely between providers and move quickly, so compare on the day you send rather than relying on last month's answer.

Do Canadian banks accept Nigerian credit history?

Canadian bureaus do not import it, but newcomer advisers at RBC, TD, and CIBC will read a credit report you bring and may use it to support a higher starting limit.

How fast can I qualify for a premium card?

Roughly twelve months of on-time payments on a newcomer card usually puts you in range, provided you also meet the $60,000 personal or $100,000 household income requirement most Visa Infinite and World Elite cards carry.
