Moving to Canada from India

A strong move from India is built before the flight: the right NOC, an approved language score, university records sent by the right institution, employer letters that prove duties, clean source-of-funds evidence and a bank plan that changes with NRI status. Those pieces decide the route and protect the first year.

Canada offers deep Indian communities and real career paths, but there is no direct working holiday and the Student Direct Stream has ended. The winning order is Express Entry and provincial assessment first, genuine employer options second, and study only when the credential, PGWP rules and family budget stand on their own.

Which route fits an Indian profile?

Start with Express Entry and provincial nominations using real test and ECA results. Add employer, study, community and family routes only where the official criteria match.

The move, stage by stage

Filter by stage for India-specific instructions on PCC, university records, NOC proof, study rules, FEMA banking, EPFO, driving, digital access and family landing.

For an Indian citizen, the most reliable Canadian plan is evidence-led from day one. There is no direct International Experience Canada agreement and no special fast student stream. Express Entry, a provincial nomination, a supported work permit, a carefully chosen study program or family sponsorship must do the legal work. The practical advantage is a large Indian-Canadian network, strong direct-flight links and Canadian employers that already understand many Indian degrees and industries.

Do firstWhy it changes the whole plan
Take a real Express Entry score inventoryAge, approved language results, education assessment, work duties and spouse factors decide whether from India is realistic
Check the destination occupation's regulatorAn immigration approval does not license a nurse, teacher, engineer, pharmacist, doctor, lawyer or skilled trade
Build employment evidence before resigningDetailed duties, hours and pay are harder to reconstruct after HR access and manager relationships disappear
Separate immigration funds from family assets needs accessible, documentable money; property value and borrowed funds do not become settlement funds
Choose city from income after rentToronto and Vancouver offer networks and job volume, but a lower-cost province can produce the stronger first two years

Highest-return preparation

Collect university-issued records, passport and civil records, detailed work letters, salary proof and a clean address or travel timeline while you are still in India. These are harder to replace than any Canadian item you can buy after landing.

India to Canada questions, answered

Clear answers on routes, tests, study, PCC, bank accounts, driving and parents.

Can an Indian citizen get a Canadian working-holiday permit?

Not directly. India has no youth mobility agreement with Canada, so Indian citizens cannot enter pools based on Indian citizenship. Use Express Entry, provincial nomination, employer, study or family routes that match the facts.

Do I need IELTS if I studied and work in English?

Yes for programs that require an approved language result. Express Entry accepts specified tests such as IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English. Education or workplace language does not replace the test.

Is SDS still available to Indian students?

No. Canada ended the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024. Indian study-permit files use the regular stream, and a GIC does not create SDS processing.

Which Indian police certificate does IRCC accept?

calls for a Police Clearance Certificate and publishes India-specific instructions. Applicants in India generally use the passport authority route; applicants abroad follow the Indian mission or consular process. A generic character certificate is not automatically equivalent.

Should I keep my resident Indian savings account?

Tell the bank when you become non-resident under FEMA and follow its redesignation process, commonly to NRO. NRE and FCNR accounts serve different foreign-income and currency needs. Do not keep using an ordinary resident account without disclosure.

Will my Indian driving licence exchange directly?

Generally no. Indian licences are usually treated as non-reciprocal, so expect knowledge and road testing. Official proof of experience from the issuing authority may help you receive experience credit under provincial rules.

Does a Canadian study permit guarantee PR?

No. Admission, a study permit, PGWP eligibility, skilled work and permanent residence are separate decisions. Choose study for the credential and labour-market return even if immigration rules change.

Can my parents come as dependants on my Express Entry file?

No. Parents are not dependants on an economic application. After you qualify in Canada, super visa and parent or grandparent sponsorship may be options under their own rules.

Three things worth doing this week

Immigration is one decision. The rest of the move is money, city choice, housing and work, and all of it is easier to judge with numbers in front of you.

  1. Choose one primary route

Match your age, work history, education, language scores and job offer to the routes that are open now.

    Open the pathway finder
  2. Price the city on local income

Compare rent, take-home pay and transport before a job offer or family connection locks in the province.

    Compare city affordability
  3. Start the evidence folder

Collect identity, education, employment, police and financial records while every issuing office is still close by.

    Open the document organizer
